You are parked at a campsite somewhere between Palmetto and the Gulf Coast, the Florida sun is already climbing, and your RV generator will not start. The air conditioner is dead, the refrigerator is warming up, and frustration is setting in fast. Before you call for a tow or give up on the weekend, work through this guide. Many generator no-start problems have simple causes you can address on the spot — and knowing the difference between a quick fix and a shop repair can save you hours of wasted effort.

Why RV Generators Won't Start: The Most Common Causes

1. Fuel Problems

This is the single most common culprit. Your generator has its own fuel pickup inside the tank, and most RV manufacturers set it so the generator will not run when the tank drops below one-quarter full. Check your fuel gauge first. If the tank is low, fill it and try again.

In Florida, ethanol-blended fuel (E10 and E15) is the norm at most pumps. Ethanol absorbs moisture from the air, and in the heat and humidity of Southwest Florida, fuel sitting in a generator for weeks or months can go stale, separate, or varnish the carburetor. If your RV has been in storage, stale fuel is a very likely suspect.

2. Low or Dirty Oil

Most generators have a low-oil shutdown sensor that cuts the engine before it can be damaged. If the oil level is at or below the minimum mark, the generator simply will not start — and it will not give you much warning. Check the dipstick, top off with the correct weight oil, and try again. While you are at it, look at the oil's color. Black, gritty oil is overdue for a change and can cause hard-starting even when the level is correct.

3. Choke Position

If your generator has a manual choke, a cold engine needs the choke closed to start and an already-warm engine needs it open. Getting this backwards is a surprisingly common mistake, especially if someone else last used the unit.

4. Overload or Load Disconnect

Some generators will not start if a heavy load — like an air conditioner — is already switched on. Try turning off all appliances, starting the generator at no load, letting it stabilize for 30 seconds, and then bringing loads on one at a time.

5. Dirty or Clogged Carburetor

Varnish deposits from old fuel are the leading cause of generator carburetors failing in Florida's climate. If the engine cranks but will not fire, or fires briefly and dies, a gummed-up carburetor is a strong possibility. A can of carburetor cleaner sprayed into the air intake can sometimes free a lightly fouled carb, but a heavily varnished one needs to be removed and cleaned or replaced.

6. Fouled or Worn Spark Plug

A spark plug that is fouled with carbon, cracked, or simply worn out will prevent ignition. Spark plugs are inexpensive and easy to inspect. Pull it, look for heavy deposits or a cracked insulator, and replace it if there is any doubt.

7. Weak or Dead Battery

The generator's starting circuit draws from either the coach battery or a dedicated starting battery. A battery that is low on charge, sulfated from sitting in the heat, or simply old will not crank the generator fast enough to start it. If you hear slow cranking or a series of clicks, the battery is the first place to look.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Checklist

Work through these in order before concluding you have a serious mechanical problem:

  1. Check the fuel level. Tank should be at least one-quarter full.
  2. Check the oil level. Top off if low; note the oil's condition.
  3. Inspect the air filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow and can prevent starting.
  4. Verify the choke setting if your unit has a manual choke.
  5. Turn off all electrical loads in the coach before attempting a start.
  6. Check the generator's circuit breaker — it may have tripped. Reset it and try again.
  7. Inspect the spark plug. Remove, clean, or replace as needed.
  8. Test the coach battery voltage. It should read 12.4 volts or higher at rest.
  9. Smell the fuel. Old or phase-separated fuel has a sour or varnish-like odor. If in doubt, drain and replace it.
  10. Try a shot of starting fluid (used sparingly) to determine whether the engine will fire at all. If it fires briefly on starting fluid but dies, fuel delivery is the problem.

Onan Generator Specifics

Onan (a Cummins brand) is the most common generator found in RVs, and for good reason — they are reliable and well-supported. That said, Onan units have a few known quirks worth knowing.

The Onan "3-fault" lockout is one of the most misunderstood issues owners encounter. If the generator attempts to start three times and fails, the control board locks it out and the unit will not crank again until the fault is cleared. On most Onan models, you can reset this by holding the stop button for a few seconds. Consult your owner's manual for the exact procedure for your model.
