Common RV Generator Problems We Diagnose
Most generator problems fall into recognizable patterns. If you are experiencing any of these, a diagnostic appointment is the right starting point — we find the actual cause before recommending a repair.
Could be a low oil shutdown, clogged carburetor, failed choke solenoid, weak battery, or a control board fault. We read stored fault codes and inspect fuel, ignition, and electrical systems to isolate the cause.
A generator that runs briefly then stops is usually protecting itself — low oil pressure, high temperature, a load fault, or a carburetor that cannot sustain fuel delivery under load. Fault codes narrow this down quickly.
Runs but produces no AC power. Typically a failed AVR (automatic voltage regulator), a failed capacitor, or a winding fault in the alternator. Can also be a tripped internal breaker.
Unstable RPM, hunting, or surging under load usually points to a carburetor issue, a governor problem, or a fuel delivery fault. Common in generators that have sat unused with ethanol-blended fuel in the system.
Onan generators log fault codes that identify the system that triggered a shutdown. Reading and interpreting these codes correctly requires factory diagnostic software — we have it.
Blue smoke indicates oil burning; black smoke indicates a rich fuel mixture. A fuel smell at rest may indicate a carburetor float issue or a fuel line leak. These should be diagnosed promptly.
Repeated breaker trips under load can indicate an overloaded circuit, a failing AVR, or a winding fault. Overheating shutdowns are often caused by blocked cooling airflow or a coolant system issue.
Onan recommends service intervals based on hours of operation. Scheduled maintenance includes oil and filter changes, spark plug inspection, air filter service, and load bank testing to verify output.

We inspect fuel delivery, ignition, oil level and pressure, cooling, and electrical output. For no-start conditions we test the battery, choke, and starter circuit. For output problems we test voltage, frequency, and load response.
Diagnosis and Estimate
We tell you what we found and what it will cost to repair before any work begins. If the repair involves parts, we use genuine OEM components — not aftermarket substitutes.
Repair and Verification
After the repair, we run the generator under load and verify output voltage and frequency meet factory specification. For maintenance visits, we complete a service record that documents the work performed.
